The five freelance skills we would bet on right now are AI video editing, AI integration, data annotation, chatbot building, and a traditional skill you already have, sped up with AI. The first four are among the fastest growers in Upwork’s In-Demand Skills 2026 report, with AI video on top at 329%. The fifth is our own pick, and for most readers it is the most realistic.
Before you sign up for a course, read those numbers carefully. They measure growth on one marketplace, and they come from a company that benefits when freelancers join it. They are useful signals, not a salary guarantee.
This is educational content, not financial advice. Nothing here promises income. Many people earn little or nothing when they start.
The numbers behind the list
These figures are from a summary of Upwork’s report, which is based on 2025 US marketplace earnings across six categories of work.
| Skill | Year-over-year growth | Barrier to entry (our view) |
|---|---|---|
| AI video generation and editing | +329% | Medium |
| AI integration | +178% | High |
| AI data annotation and labeling | +154% | Low |
| AI chatbot development | +71% | Medium |
| AI-related skills overall | +109% | Varies |
A warning about percentages: 329% growth from a small base can still be a small market. The report tells you the direction, not how many clients are waiting for you. Check real listings before you commit.
1. AI video generation and editing
What clients buy: short ads, product clips, social videos and explainers made faster than a traditional shoot.
Why it is growing: small businesses want constant video and cannot pay for a production crew. AI drops the cost enough to bring them into the market.
How to test it this week: make three 30-second sample ads for imaginary local businesses. The editing, pacing and script are the actual skill. Anyone can generate a clip, but fewer people can make one that sells something.
Watch out for: commercial rights on your tool’s plan. Check them before delivering to a paying client.
2. AI integration
What clients buy: connecting AI to the tools a company already uses, such as a CRM, a help desk or a spreadsheet, so that it does something useful without anyone copying and pasting.
Why it is growing: companies have paid for AI subscriptions and now want them to do real work.
How to test it this week: use a no-code automation tool to build one workflow you can show on video, such as sorting incoming emails and drafting replies. If you can code, this is where we would focus, since it is harder to commoditize.
Watch out for: client data. You are touching real systems, so you need clear permission and a written scope.
3. AI data annotation and labeling
What clients buy: people to label, check and rate data used for training AI models.
Why it is growing: models need human judgment, especially in specialized fields.
How to test it: look at annotation jobs on established platforms, and read the pay terms closely. Generic labeling tends to sit at the low end of the pay range, in our view, while subject experts in fields like law, health or finance are better placed to charge more.
Watch out for: scams. Never pay a fee to get access to “AI training work.” Our guide to AI scams covers the warning signs. We would treat this as a way to start earning, and not as a long-term career.
4. AI chatbot development
What clients buy: a bot trained on a company’s own documents, able to answer customer questions accurately and hand off to a human when it cannot.
Why it is growing: support is expensive and customer questions are repetitive. It is one of the easiest AI purchases for a small business to justify.
How to test it this week: build a free demo for a local business using its public FAQ, then show the owner a recording. A working demo beats any pitch.
Watch out for: wrong answers. A bot that invents a refund policy creates a real problem for the client, so include testing and a handoff path in your offer. It is also a good reason to charge for monthly upkeep.
5. The skill you already have, with AI on top
This is the pick that comes from us, not Upwork, and it is the one we would suggest to most readers. Upwork’s report also says demand held up for traditional skills in coding, creative work, marketing and customer support. So you may not need to switch careers. A bookkeeper who uses AI to clear a backlog faster, or a marketer who produces more tested ad variations, has both domain judgment and speed. A beginner with only the tool has neither the judgment nor the track record.
The AI writing tools we recommend for small business and our list of free AI tools are cheap ways to start.
What seems to be fading
One summary of the data reports data entry down 43%, basic graphic design down 28% and generic copywriting down 19%. We could not confirm those three figures in Upwork’s original release, so treat the exact numbers with caution. The direction does make sense, though: these are the tasks a client can now try on their own with a chatbot.
The word that matters is “basic.” Design and writing are not dead. The cheap, undifferentiated version is losing ground. If you do this work, move toward what AI handles badly: strategy, brand consistency, specialized knowledge and accountability for the final result.

|---|---|
| Already working in a skilled field | Option 5, your field plus AI |

| Technical, or you enjoy automation | AI integration or chatbots |
| Short on time and in need of small, flexible work | Annotation, with realistic pay expectations |
Who should skip this list
- Anyone who needs money by December. A seasonal job is more dependable, as our holiday job vs side hustle math shows.
- Anyone planning to pay for an expensive course first. Build a free sample instead, and see if anyone cares.
Our take
Do not chase the biggest percentage. AI video’s 329% will attract a flood of new sellers, and a fast-growing skill gets crowded quickly. What lasts is a pairing: an AI skill that is growing, and knowledge of a specific industry that newcomers lack. “AI video editor” is a crowded label. “AI video ads for dental practices” has far fewer competitors.
Pick one, build three samples this week, and test it on real clients. Our comparison of Upwork and Fiverr fees can help you decide where to list it, and the $400 tax rule tells you what to save once the money starts coming in.
