Did you know your AI chats may train the model? How to turn it off

Did you know the AI chatbot you use for free may keep your conversations and, unless you change a setting, use them to improve its models? Most major chatbots let you switch this off in a few clicks. The exact menu names change, so use the steps below as a map and confirm them in the app.

This article is general information about privacy settings, not legal advice. Read each provider’s current privacy policy.

Why it matters for your money

People paste bank statements, tax forms, contracts and salary numbers into chatbots to get quick help. Anything you type may be stored, reviewed in some cases, or used for training depending on the plan and settings. That is a risk with financial details, because a leak or a shared device could expose them. It also ties into the scam risks we covered in AI scams and how to protect your money.

Where to look

Chatbot Where the setting usually lives What to look for
ChatGPT Settings, then Data controls An option about improving the model with your chats
Gemini Your Gemini Apps activity settings Activity saving and auto-delete
Claude Settings, then Privacy The option to help improve the models

Menus move around between updates. If you cannot find an option, search the provider’s help center for “data controls” or “privacy settings”.

Five-minute privacy checkup

  1. Turn off model training where the option exists.
  2. Set chat history to delete automatically, if offered.
  3. Use temporary or incognito chats for sensitive questions.
  4. Review connected apps. Remove any email, drive or calendar access you do not use.
  5. Secure the account with a strong password and two-factor authentication.

What never to paste

  • Social Security numbers, passport or driver’s license numbers
  • Full bank or card numbers, passwords and one-time codes
  • Medical records with your name attached
  • Confidential work files your employer has not approved

Instead, remove names and numbers first. Ask your question about “a $12,000 balance at 24% interest” rather than uploading the whole statement. Our AI budget planner guide shows how to get help without sharing account details.

Free vs paid plans

Paid and business plans often come with different data terms than free ones, but this varies by provider and plan. Do not assume paying means private. Read the plan’s terms, and for a company, ask the IT team which tools are approved.

Our take

You do not need to stop using AI. Spend five minutes on the settings, strip identifying details from anything you paste, and treat a chatbot like a stranger who is helpful but not sworn to secrecy. That one habit prevents most of the avoidable damage.
